New Year's Resolutions - Highly overrated?
At the beginning of every new year, we get the feeling that we must improve ourselves, our lives, or surroundings. Why?
Simply because this is a time when there's a feeling of renewal and gratefulness for having survived a period of challenges and/ successes. With these, come feelings of hope for better, or an impetus to make ourselves and surroundings better.
Overrated? Yes, but in a good way!
Individual efforts at creating better, will result in the betterment of whole societies and by extension the whole world.
Healthy Resolutions will not be beneficial without commitment. Commitment changes Healthy Resolutions into Healthy Habits.
1) PLAN - eating healthy and practicing healthy habits require strategy.
2) EAT BREAKFAST - do not skip the most important meal of the day. This is the deal maker/ breaker for a long healthy life.
3) EAT DAILY BALANCED MEALS - taking supplements where foods providing nutrients are scarce or lacking.
4) TAKE A BOTTLE OF WATER WHEREVER YOU GO - so as to make sure you fulfill the daily requirement.
5) BUILD HEALTHY SOCIAL CONNECTIONS - an essential ingredient of good health. It's true! Your friends can make/ break you. They provide the emotional support, sense of belonging, and sometimes, even valuable health information .
6) EXERCISE - 3-4 times a week for at least 25 minutes. Find fun ways to 'sneak in' exercise other times- park further away from the entrance to your office or the shopping centre, take the stairs sometimes. Have growing children? Reserve time on the weekend for an outdoor game or walk in the park with them.
7) GET ENOUGH SLEEP - your body needs this 'down-time' to repair and rejuvenate itself. Yet another habit that requires planning. If you plan your day effectively, you won't need to stay up late to work.
8) SNACK ON FRUITS & VEGETABLES -refrain from stocking up on junk food. Spend this extra money on fresh fruits and vegetables. This is also a tried and proven way of getting your 8 servings a day. You'll be happy you committed, as soon as you start experiencing higher energy levels and liking what you see in the mirror.
9) EAT SMALLER PORTIONS MORE OFTEN- a great habit which prevents overindulgence and obesity.
10) FIND A HOBBY - something you find relaxing and entertaining.

Tips for ensuring you get the full benefits of Drinking Water
Did you know humans can go without food for about two months, but we would die of thirst if we went more than a week or so without water? Yet, many of us live in a state of chronic dehydration and may not even realize it. 75% of your body is water and 90% of your brain is water. Water is very beneficial to our bodies and the more water you consume, the more likely you are to experience the amazing health benefits of water. Can you remember what it feels like to be thirsty and then drink water? It is like an immediate rejuvenation. However, water is not just a remedy for thirst; thirst is a warning - a part of the body's natural defense mechanism - that your body's water level has run too low. This in turn means the body will not be able to function normally and illnesses will arise as a reaction to this.
Drinking water is truly the best way to achieve a healthy body.
Many doctors will agree that, water is of great help in curing some minor, even serious illnesses. Cancer, weight issues, diabetes, hearing and sight problems, headaches and even heart disease are some common illnesses that water can heal. Now water alone cannot easily cure these illnesses, what it does is provide proper hydration, which then optimizes conditions for normal functioning of your body.
Water provides energy, so cells are able to carry out their various functions, including repairing body tissues. Additionally, it helps to cleanse and reduce toxin levels in the body, removing what are essentially disease causing agents. Drinking water is truly the most natural way of healing illnesses.
Always drink water for the sake of your body and health and not just because you are thirsty.
Make it a habit to reach for water; here's to your health, coffee, juice and soda will not suffice.
Keep a glass of water handy, there is no replacement for it. A word of caution though ...
Do not get too carried away and drink excess water. You can exceed the daily recommended water quota by a few glasses but keep in mind that as with all things, moderation is key. Drinking too much water can be fatal!!! Have 8 glasses a day, as an ideal. More exacting is to drink half your body weight in fluid ounces, taking into account, of course, your level of activity and the temperature of your surroundings.

Frequency is equally important. Ideally, you want to be ingesting enough water to match your body's use throughout the day. Pace yourself - drink water before and during times of increased activity.
Quality of water is important too, the better it tastes, the more likely you are to drink it.
Water is very essential to our bodies, and drinking water also helps reduce wrinkles in the face and serves as a natural health treatment to the various types of diseases affecting humans. |
Drinking water is a good habit. Here are some tips for developing this good habit:
- Make a bet with a co-worker to see who can drink more water throughout the course of a day.
- Have a big glass of water at every transitional point of the day: when you first get up, just before leaving the house, when you sit down to work, and so on.
- Make it convenient - keep bottles of 16 oz Tropical Blue® Natural Spring Water on or near your desk and reach for it all day.
- When you have fruit juice, fill half the glass with water.
- When you have a craving for junk food, drink a glass of water immediately. You feel full quickly while avoiding the calories, and the craving will fade.
- Have one glass every hour on the hour while at work. At the end of the work day, your daily water requirement is met.
- After each trip to the restroom, drink an eight-ounce glass OR half a bottle of 16 oz Tropical Blue® Natural Spring Water to replenish your system.
- Drink a diet soda only after you have had two to four glasses of water OR two (2) bottles of 16 oz Tropical Blue® Natural Spring Water . Eventually, you may find that you won't want the soda anymore.
- Carry a small Tropical Blue® Natural Spring Water 8 oz water bottle at all times and drink during downtime, while waiting in a bank line or sitting on the bus.
- Bring a two-liter bottle of water to work and try to drink it all before you leave work. If you did not finish, drink it in traffic on the way home.
- Always keep a 24-ounce bottle of water handy while watching TV, doing laundry, making dinner or reading the papers or a book.
- Add drinking two glasses of water to your daily skincare regimen. Drink, cleanse, moisturize, then drink again.

The Importance of Maintaining a Balanced Water Intake
Why are there so many benefits to drinking water?
This is because all of our most vital bodily functions have to take place in the presence of water.
Water is a good conductor of electricity. The body's many processes are controlled by the brain, which effects this control through electrical impulses sent from every single part of the body to the brain and back. It's the presence of water that ensures these 'electrical messages' are effectively transferred so that the body is able to regulate processes, maintaining balance, and therefore, good health.
Water makes digestion of food possible. Firstly, the water in saliva moistens the food so it passes easily through the different body parts that make up the digestive system. Then too, all the enzymes, hormones and co-enzymes needed to make the food into small particles, are all dissolved in watery body fluids and are only functional in this state. Digestion starts up a series of events, all dependent on the presence of water in the body.
Once food is broken down into small particles, it must now be carried to every one of the billions of cells in our bodies. How does it get to all these cells? Dissolved in the watery fluid part of blood, it is easily transported to all the cells. Here, in the cells, energy is released using oxygen and enzymes dissolved in water.
The waste products, from much of these processes has to be gotten rid of dissolved in ... you guessed it!.. WATER. Urea (unwanted protein) is removed, dissolved in water in the form of urine. Extra salt is also removed in water through urine and sweat. Carbon dioxide is transported, dissolved in blood, to the lungs. Waste electrolytes must also leave the body, dissolved in water.
...and that is just merely the beginning of the very many vital roles of water in our bodies. If you think that was cool...
...here are some more cool facts...
It was already said and I am going to say it again, this time however, I am going to add the facts to back it up. Water consumption is the most natural way to lose fat. Drinking water fills you up, curbing your appetite. There are added advantages too, firstly, water reduces sodium buildup and aids in keeping muscles well toned. It also helps the body get rid of excess waste and toxins. If you don’t give your body enough water, it stores water in an effort to always have enough. So the more water you consume the less fluid your body retains. Water also reduces fat deposits in our bodies by helping the body metabolize stored up fat. If our kidneys don’t get enough water, the liver becomes overloaded. The liver is the organ that metabolizes fat, but it will be unable to do so if it’s busy doing the kidneys' job.
Need more reasons to drink water? Water is one of the best ways to prevent and cure most common illnesses. Common allergies, asthma, depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, headaches, chronic fatigue syndrome, colitis, alcohol dependency, most common aches and pains are rarely experienced when you ensure you drink the recommended eight (8) glasses of water per day. If you are suffering from any of these or more, try monitoring your water intake and experience the difference. Your body is only ailing because it cannot function properly, and that's because there isn't enough water to maintain the equilibrium on which it depends!
In all these things and more, lies the truth to my claim, that water can make a happier, more energetic and younger looking you. When your body is performing at its peak (like the presence of sufficient water will allow it to) you become healthier and more energetic. Feeling healthy and having energy, allows you to focus better, getting more things done. As you become more productive, and begin to experience the benefits of this productivity, you become happier.
Much of the physical deterioration which appear consistent with aging, have been shown to run concurrent with decreased water intake. As people get older, they seem to have smaller amounts of body water. They become less energetic, lose muscle tone and wrinkle increasingly. But... How many persons have you seen whose age defy our concept of what they 'should look like' for their age? I guarantee that their lifestyle is the secret to looking younger, a lifestyle of balancing diets and ensuring nutritional needs are adequately met.
May I also add here, that there can be no substitutes for water. Consuming large amounts of fruit juices, coffee, alcohol, soda or other beverages cannot compensate for or be counted among the eight (8) glasses of water our bodies need. Our bodies need water just the way nature intended it. Piped water and other bottled water are loaded with chlorine, sodium and other potentially dangerous impurities. Tropical Blue provides natural spring water, ensuring there is nothing harmful in it, so its safe for your consumption.
